Ingredients

  • 1 box (15.25 oz) vanilla cake mix
  • 1 box (15.25 oz) chocolate cake mix
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 pints vanilla ice cream, softened
  • 1 cup chocolate sauce
  • ½ cup caramel sauce (optional)
  • Whipped cream for garnish (optional)
  • Chocolate shavings for garnish (optional)

How to Make Layered Cake with Ice Cream and Drizzle

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour three 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. Prepare the vanilla cake mix according to package instructions, using 2 eggs, ½ cup vegetable oil, and 1 cup water. Divide the batter evenly among two of the prepared cake pans.
  3. Prepare the chocolate cake mix in the same way, using 2 eggs, ½ cup vegetable oil, and 1 cup water. Pour the chocolate batter into the third prepared cake pan.
  4. Bake all three cakes for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Allow them to cool in the pans for about 10 minutes before transferring to wire racks to cool completely.
  5. Once the cakes are cool, place one layer of vanilla cake on a serving platter. Spread a layer of softened vanilla ice cream on top, then place the chocolate cake layer on top of the ice cream.
  6. Repeat the process with another layer of vanilla ice cream and the second vanilla cake layer. Top with the final layer of chocolate cake.
  7. Drizzle chocolate sauce generously over the top of the cake, allowing it to cascade down the sides. If desired, drizzle caramel sauce on top as well.
  8. Garnish with whipped cream and chocolate shavings if you like. Slice and serve immediately or freeze for later enjoyment!

Tips for the Best Results

  • Make sure your cakes are completely cool before layering to prevent melting the ice cream.
  • If you want cleaner slices, let the cake freeze for about 30 minutes before cutting.
  • Feel free to mix up the ice cream flavors; chocolate or mint chocolate chip could be exciting alternatives!

Easy Variations

  • Swap out the vanilla ice cream for strawberry or cookies and cream for a different flavor profile.
  • Add layers of fresh fruit, like strawberries or bananas, between the cake and ice cream layers for added texture and flavor.
  • Drizzle with different sauces like raspberry or butterscotch for a unique twist.

What to Serve With It

  • A scoop of ice cream on the side for extra indulgence.
  • Fresh fruit, such as berries or sliced peaches, to balance the richness.
  • A cup of coffee or hot chocolate to complement the dessert.

Storage and Reheating

Store any leftover cake in an airtight container in the freezer. It can keep well for up to 2 weeks. For serving, let it thaw in the refrigerator for a few hours before enjoying.
